Portrait of Jordan Matters
Leyland & Matters CPA, CA, CIM

With Burlington as the place I have always called home, a strong work ethic was instilled in me from a young age by my parents, who supported me in many efforts including delivering newspapers as my first real job. I then found myself working in the kitchen of a local McDonald’s restaurant. My dad thought this would be valuable experience for me, and he was right.

I then moved on to the sporting goods retail world, where I worked throughout high school and university. This job was where I really came to understand what was involved in helping people find what was right for them, learning to listen and being empathetic were essentials. I joined the ranks as a professional in the world of finance when I secured a co-op position at a regional public accounting firm while attending Brock University, earning my Bachelor of Accounting and then my CPA, CA. I then came to the realization that despite enjoying the firm environment, public accounting was not my long-term career path.

I was then introduced to Doug Leyland. As they say, everything happens for a reason. Spending time with Doug, he shared with great enthusiasm the comprehensive and forward-looking planning I could be part of. His drive and passion were infectious, in a good way. I decided to join Doug’s team, and it has been an incredibly fulfilling journey. I really enjoy being part of a team and helping people plan for the future by navigating often complex and always uncertain circumstances.

Giving back to the community and to those less fortunate was also instilled in me at an early age. In 2004 my dad founded the local charity Shifra Homes Inc., and I am proud to continue honouring his legacy by serving as the Treasurer. I am also an active member of the Estate Planners’ Council of Halton. Outside of the office I enjoy playing hockey and golf, pushing my limits with my running shoes on, and exploring the beautiful wilderness this world has to offer, though nothing beats spending time with my wife, daughters, and Australian Labradoodle.

Regardless of where I am or what I am doing, I often lean on two phrases I heard repeatedly from each of my grandfathers: say what you mean, do what you say, and work smarter, not harder. Phrases to live by.
